Abandoned Bike Mapping Project

Unfortunately broken down, rusting, and badly vandalized bikes are a common sight on New York’s streets.  Not only are these sad remnants a terrible eyesore, they take up much needed parking spaces.  Many cities have programs in place to remove and recycle these bike parts, and it is time New York does the same.  Please help me build a map that shows the magnitude of the problem and that could one day provide a starting point for their systematic removal.

To help build the map email me at ryan@ibikenyc.com and you will be added as a collaborator.  Red pins are for racks that are damaged or are causing an obstruction and need removed, relocated, or replaced.  Blue pins are for racks or other objects that have abandoned bike parts attached. Please embed a picture if possible.

If you see a bike that is yours and not abandoned, please contact me and the bike will be removed from the map.

Help build the map!

  1. this blog is awesome

  2. is there really no program in NYC to remove annoying, abandoned frames??! I’d like to try to get a few removed from the Dekalb Ave Subway station racks.

    • Unfortunately there is no such program at this time. I’ve been advocating for one for a while, but it takes time to put something like this in place. If you have time to take pictures of the bikes and email them to me, I’d be happy to add them to the map. That doesn’t mean they’ll be removed, but it raises awareness about the problem.
